FAQs

Does this actually do anything? (I've read that these don't work)

Fair question, and the honest answer has two halves. Where this works best is on the animals that dig and tunnel — rats, mice, moles and voles. The pulse travels through the soil, the ground stops feeling like a quiet place to burrow, and they move somewhere else.

Snakes are the second half, and it's indirect: they follow the food. Fewer rodents tunnelling under your yard means less reason for a snake to come looking. That's a real effect, and it's also not a guarantee — which is why you get ninety days to see what happens on your own block.

How does it work if I can't hear anything?

Because it isn't meant for your ears — it's meant for the ground. Every 30 seconds or so each stake sends a pulse down through the soil. To an animal living in a burrow, that's the ground shaking around it, over and over, with no obvious source.

Above ground you'll notice nothing at all. No sound, no light, nothing the kids or the dog will react to. It's the quietest thing in your yard and that's the point.

Will this keep snakes out of my yard?

No — and we're not going to tell you it will. Nothing you can buy makes a yard snake-proof, and anyone selling you that is selling you something they can't deliver.

How many do I need, and how far apart? (is six actually enough?)

Six covers a typical suburban block — and this is the part people get wrong. One stake does very little on its own. They work as a ring, so you space them out around the edges of the area you care about and along the paths things travel: the fence line, the shed, the woodpile, the chook run, the long grass at the back.

There's a placement plan in the box. If you're on acreage, most people run a second set along the boundary closest to the bush.

Will it bother my dog, the chooks or the kids?

Vibration travels further through damp, compact soil than through dry sand, so if you're on very sandy ground you'll want them closer together.

What does it actually work on?
